Jiaqi Mao is a multidisciplinary artist from China, currently based in New York and Nanjing. Her practice is rooted in moving images, integrating a diverse range of materials and mediums. She weaves together traditional and contemporary techniques—including printmaking, installation, textile art, performance, and documentary video—to construct layered visual narratives that bridge the past and present.

Her moving images explore the lived experiences of Chinese women, examining feminism’s meaning, transmission, and growth across generations. Deeply engaged with feminist discourse, her work emphasizes that feminism cannot exist as an abstract ideology but emerges through intergenerational dialogue, conflict, and renewal. Through the lens of China’s education ideology and the microcosm of women within families, she portrays their evolving voices and experiences, framing them against the weight of history and cultural legacies.

As a Chinese artist based in New York, Jiaqi uses her unique position to reflect on what defines "East" and "West." In an era of deglobalization and cultural fragmentation, she seeks to challenge distorted narratives and mutual misperceptions. Through her works, she offers nuanced portrayals of East Asian women’s emotions, struggles, and complexities, while simultaneously exploring the intergenerational relationships among women, fostering a more honest and multifaceted representation of their realities.
Jiaqi previously lived and studied in London, earning a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, UAL, followed by an MA in Print from the Royal College of Art. She is now based in New York, where she is completing further studies in Video Art.
